History of Existing Building - Historic City Hall

Historic City Hall functioned as a city hall and fire station
during WWII and the Cold War when Fairbanks experienced
booms in population and construction.  The new building
anchored the city government downtown.  Historic City Hall
served its several functions until the 1967 Chena River Flood,
when the community made a transition to 1960’s planning,
urban renewal and modern architectural styles.  A new fire
and police station was constructed after the 1967 flood.

Historic City Hall continued to serve as the seat of city
government until 1994, when the City Council voted to move
city offices to Main School.

Still owned by the City of Fairbanks, it has been operated by
the Downtown Association of Fairbanks since 1996, and is
now home to the Fairbanks Community Museum, the Yukon
Quest Store and Family Centered Services.  The building
maintains its historic fabric and integrity.   On May 30th 2002,
Historic City Hall was recognized as being of historical and
architectural significance and was listed in the National
Register of Historic Places.
